Lana’i Lookout

On a trip around the island of O’ahu, we stopped at Lana’i Lookout. We heard that the waves were getting a little crazy on the windward side of the island, and what we saw didn’t disappoint. When we got out of the car we almost blew away the wind was so strong.

Many people were venturing to the edges of the cliffs over the raging ocean. I was not so adventurous, but this photo was of someone who was braver. Really, she wasn’t even one of the people who go to the very edge. Apparently there was a cliff collapse as recently as 2022, so go to the edge at your own risk! When I took this photo I had to take a stance against the wind so I wouldn’t shake the camera. There was not only wind blowing, but we were also getting pelted with tiny pieces of sand and salt spray.

When we got back to the car I noticed I couldn’t really see. I took my glasses off to discover they were completely coated in salt. Trying to wipe them clean just smeared everything so note for next time is to bring wet lens wipes! Somehow the lens on the camera was ok. (good coatings Nikon!)

There were so many amazing vistas at this lookout that I’ll probably post a few more here. The gigantic (to me) waves were beautiful crashing against the black rock. It was like the ocean had been shaken up and was churning right in this area. I half expected the Black Pearl to come up from the depths. It was well worth being tortured by the wind and sand!
